Saudi Women may be able drive again
Saudi Arab has the honorable distinction of being the only country in the world where women are not allowed to drive. I didn’t know that until I read an article on BBC yesterday about this. But it appears that they might be able to drive again. I know its hard to comprehend that they’ll be allowed to drive again but stranger things have happened. Saleh al-Turki, the chairman of the Saudi Chambers of Commerce seems to think so anyway. 1 in 20 women work in Saudi Arabia or Saudia as its called here. A survey has shown that 50% of Saudi women actually own cars but are unable to drive. Some women rights organizations have also been doing petitioning stuff and campaigns over the years to get this ban lifted but His Holiness King Abdullah is not one to budge it seems. Wajeha Huwaider who posted a video of herself driving on YouTube seems optimistic that the ban will be raised in His Holiness King Abdullah’s reign. Maybe in 10-20 years.
I wasn’t able to find any specific reason for this ban though. Maybe its got something to do with their interpretation of Islam or maybe they think women don’t have have what it takes to drive on Saudi roads. I’m sure their shariah council has a valid reason. So if you go to Saudia as a woman be careful not to drive or the police will apprehend you and ship you off to da jail. Until the ban is lifted you gotta take the bus like me.
Why Blog?
Like you know why why why. Why should you blog? Why should I blog? Why should we all blog? Why should anyone blog? Now that I’ve jumped on the bandwagon and started blogging I realize that its hard to blog. Time is a precious commodity and spending it writing mostly useless stuff no body’s ever gonna read is difficult if not impossible. But that’s not going to stop me from blogging. Steve Yegge has a great post about this topic. So I would recommend you people go ahead and read it.
Even if nobody reads them, you should write them. It’s become pretty clear to me that blogging is a source of both innovation and clarity. I have many of my best ideas and insights while blogging. Struggling to express things that you’re thinking or feeling helps you understand them better
He outlines some of the popular reasons people don’t blog such as not having time or they’re afraid to put their thoughts on public record. But I guess the real hurdle is that nobody will read your blog. Yeah, I’m afraid this is probably going to happen. There are so many blogs now its hard to read all of them. Even if you write something that’s worth reading there’s a good chance nobody will find it. So you should blog for you and yourself. It will provide you with the clarity and insight that you need. It might even improve your writing skills. And if you become popular you could go pro and make loads of cash. You could make new friends, find a better job etc. Just think of the possibilities people. So go ahead and blog until you can blog no more.
